Residence Time Effects on Arsenate Surface Speciation at the Aluminum Oxide-water Interface

چکیده
SOILS and sediments are nearly always at disequilibrium with respect to ion transformations (Sparks, 1987). The rate of bioavailability of contaminants in the environment can be reduced with increasing time (Pignatello and Xing, 1995). The observation that less sorbate is released with increasing contact time between the sorbent and sorbate is referred to as a residence time/aging effect (Pignatello and Xing, 1995; Sparks, 1995). Even in the absence of a residence time effect, one often observes biphasic reaction processes for both sorption and desorption of metals, metalloids, and organic chemicals (Sparks, 1989). The biphasic behavior is characterized by a relatively rapid reaction followed by a slow reaction(s).The slow reactions have been ascribed to diffusion phenomena, differing sites of reactivity, and surface precipitation (Scheidegger et al., 1996); howTECHNICAL ARTICLES

Uranyl and arsenate cosorption on aluminum oxide surface
In this study, we examined the effects of simultaneous adsorption of aqueous arsenate and uranyl onto aluminum oxide over a range of pH and concentration conditions. Arsenate was used as a chemical analog for phosphate, and offers advantages for characterization via X-ray absorption spectroscopy. By combining batch experiments, speciation calculations, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray d...
متن کاملArsenate adsorption mechanisms at the allophane-water interface.
We investigated arsenate (As(V)) reactivity and surface speciation on amorphous aluminosilicate mineral (synthetic allophane) surfaces using batch adsorption experiments, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The adsorption isotherm experiments indicated that As(V) uptake increased with increasing [As-(V)]0 from 50 to 1000 microM (i.e., Langmuir type adsorptio...
متن کاملCoexisting arsenate and arsenite adsorption from water using porous pellet adsorbent: Optimization by response surface methodology
Mesoporous pellet adsorbent developed from mixing at an appropriate ratio of natural clay, iron oxide, iron powder, and rice bran was used to investigate the optimization process of batch adsorption parameters for treating aqueous solution coexisting with arsenate and arsenite. Central composite design under response surface methodology was applied for optimizing and observing both individual a...
متن کاملMechanisms of Arsenic Adsorption on Amorphous Oxides Evaluated Using Macroscopic Measurements, Vibrational Spectroscopy, and Surface Complexation Modeling.
Arsenic adsorption on amorphous aluminum and iron oxides was investigated as a function of solution pH, solution ionic strength, and redox state. In this study in situ Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic methods were combined with sorption techniques, electrophoretic mobility measurements, and surface complexation modeling to study the interaction of As(III) and As(V) with...
متن کاملMechanisms of arsenate adsorption by highly-ordered nano-structured silicate media impregnated with metal oxides.
The highly ordered mesoporous silica media, SBA-15, was synthesized and incorporated with iron, aluminum, and zinc oxides using an incipientwetness impregnation technique. Adsorption capacities and kinetics of metal-impregnated SBA-15 were compared with activated alumina which is widely used for arsenic removal. Media impregnated with 10% of aluminum by weight (designated to Al10SBA-15) had 1.9...
